MPI Knowledge Plan
MPI's vision, to create a rich global meeting industry community, offers an opportunity and an obligation to develop a learning path for the global community that ensures appropriate career and personal development at each stage of an individual's career. This knowledge “ethos” will ensure MPI is a global knowledge leader in the field of meetings and events, with the ability to attract, train and elevate talent for a rapidly expanding global industry.
Knowledge Plan Milestones
This plan is intended to ensure that the development needs of the community are met throughout the entire course of their careers, with multiple points of entry and engagement for personalized 24/7 professional and career development.
Milestone 1 – Skills Assessment & Personalized Development Plan
Regardless of their point of entry into the industry, the learning journey of our members begins with the Skills Assessment exercise that identifies critical experience, knowledge, and skill gaps and then provides a prescriptive and personalized development plan for closing those gaps.
Milestone 2 – Introduction to the Meeting & Event Industry – Career Path Options & Requirements
For those new to the industry, including our student community, MPI will offer an MPI Boot camp which is an industry on-boarding experience (e.g., Meetings & Events 101). This program will provide insights into this industry's possible career paths and teach basic skills and will likely be delivered through a blended approach of instructor-led seminars, webinars and other web-enabled development tools.
Milestone 3 – Global Certificate in Meeting Operations
For those who possess little or no industry experience (between 0 and 3 years of experience), MPI offers the Global Certificate in Meeting Operations (GCMO), launched in November 2008. This certificate, based on an internationally consistent Body of Knowledge and therefore easily transferable, equips our members with proficiencies to organize the logistics of meetings and events.
Milestone 4 – Global Certificate in Meeting Planning
For those who possess between 3 and 5 years of experience in the meeting industry, MPI offers the Global Certificate in Meeting Planning (GCMP). This certificate, based on an internationally consistent Body of Knowledge and therefore easily transferable, will equip our members with proficiencies to understand and implement the full logistics of meetings and events. The Global Certificate in Meeting Planning will also help you prepare for the designation Certified Meeting Professionals (CMP).
Milestone 5 – CMP Exam Online Study Guide
The Certification for Meeting Professionals (CMP) is a confirmation of acquired skills and competencies. The CMP is a global professional designation delivered by the Convention Industry Council (CIC). To prepare for the exam MPI offers the CMP Exam Online Study Guide and support-group study aids for successfully passing the CMP Exam.
Milestone 6 - Global Certificate in Meeting Management
For those who are at an intermediate-to-advanced level in their career (between 5 and 7 years of experience) MPI offers a Global Certificate in Meeting Management (GCMM). This program addresses the aspects of the business of meetings rather than meeting logistics.
Milestone 7 – CMM Designation
The Certification in Meetings Management (CMM) is a designation for advanced and senior industry professionals. It is looking at the business of meetings as well as business management modules related to meetings.
Milestone 8 – Executive Leadership Program
For our most senior and executive level industry professionals who have progressed beyond the need for meeting and event management education, MPI will develop a leadership program (e.g., MBA level, focused on business executive leadership skills) for presentation at its conferences or as a stand-alone opportunity, along with opportunities for on-going engagement between members of this community.
Available at any point in the learning journey will be an on-going array of training and career development opportunities (e.g., live events, distance learning, searchable web content, magazine, chapter programs) that will allow for on-going learning between milestones. Also contributing to the learning journey are the on-the-job experiences, and other training and education (e.g., university degrees).
